Thyroidectomy Services

At Spokane ENT, we provide comprehensive evaluation and surgical management of thyroid conditions, including both benign and malignant thyroid disease. The thyroid gland is located in the front of the neck and plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism through the production of thyroid hormones. Thyroid conditions can include nodules, goiter (enlargement), hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, and thyroid cancer. Our team specializes in the evaluation and surgical treatment of thyroid disorders, working closely with endocrinologists and other specialists to provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary care.

We utilize advanced diagnostic techniques to evaluate thyroid conditions, including detailed history taking to assess symptoms, medical history, and risk factors. Our evaluation includes comprehensive physical examination with careful palpation of the thyroid gland and neck lymph nodes. We may perform ultrasound imaging to characterize thyroid nodules and assess their size, characteristics, and relationship to surrounding structures. When indicated, we perform fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy to obtain tissue samples for pathological analysis, which helps determine whether nodules are benign or require surgical removal. Our team also evaluates thyroid function through blood tests and works with endocrinologists to optimize medical management when appropriate.

Our treatment approach for thyroid conditions is individualized based on the specific diagnosis and patient factors. For benign thyroid nodules that are asymptomatic and not causing cosmetic concerns or compression symptoms, we may recommend observation with periodic monitoring. For nodules that are suspicious for cancer, causing compressive symptoms, or significantly enlarged, we offer thyroid surgery including partial thyroidectomy (lobectomy) or total thyroidectomy. We utilize modern surgical techniques including nerve monitoring to protect the recurrent laryngeal nerve, which is crucial for preserving voice function. Our goal is to provide safe, effective surgical treatment while minimizing complications and preserving voice and parathyroid function. Following surgery, we provide comprehensive postoperative care and work with endocrinologists for ongoing management of thyroid hormone replacement when needed.

Surgery may be recommended for cancer, suspicious nodules, large goiters causing symptoms, or overactive thyroid that doesn't respond to other treatments.

Thyroidectomy is surgery to remove part or all of the thyroid gland. It may be done for cancer, benign nodules, or hyperthyroidism. Your surgeon will discuss the extent of surgery needed.

Most patients stay one night or go home the same day. You may need thyroid hormone replacement if the entire gland is removed. Your surgeon will provide specific instructions.
