Virginie Achim, MD
Dr. Virginie Achim joined Columbia Surgical Specialists in May 2021. Her specialty is head and neck surgery including the treatment of head and neck cancers, trans-oral robotic surgery (TORS), thyroid and parathyroid surgery, microvascular reconstruction, and sialoendoscopy. She has specialized expertise in thyroid and parathyroid surgery, offering comprehensive, patient-centered care for a wide range of thyroid disorders—from benign nodules to thyroid cancer—using advanced surgical techniques.
After completing a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of Louisville, Dr. Achim attended Dartmouth Medical School where she obtained her medical degree. She subsequently completed residency at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, WA. She obtained fellowship training in head and neck surgical oncology and microvascular reconstruction at Oregon Health and Science University from 2015-2017. She then accepted a position as assistant professor in the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Illinois in Chicago where she led the multi-disciplinary Head and Neck Cancer service line.
Dr. Achim's research interest include immunotherapy in advanced and recurrent head and neck malignancy as well as the impact of nutrition on post-operative outcomes. She is an engaged member of the American Head and Neck Society as well as the American Academic of Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery. She has authored numerous textbook chapters and has published in several peer-reviewed journals.
